ISWA Plastic Treaty Task Force – Key elements to beat plastic pollution and joint action towards a sound international instrument
We are now at a transcendental moment with solid opportunities for capitalising on the political will to take decisive action for ending plastic pollution. Currently, member states of the United Nations are in the process of negotiating a legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution by the end of 2024. ISWA has recognised the importance of giving sound technical input to the treaty negotiations while bringing waste and resource management to the main agenda. We have also worked on establishing collaboration with other stakeholders, mobilizing ISWA members, and communicating and sharing knowledge. In this session, we will discuss in a dynamic panel with task force members and key partners, the development of this process and how the waste and resources sector can play a key role as an enabler and facilitator of all the objectives of the treaty. Also, we will touch on the way forward and how this process can impact practices, businesses, governments, and communities facing plastic pollution.

Sustainability in the Healthcare Waste Industry – Regional and Onsite Treatment Approaches
The COVID pandemic brought to light the shortcomings of treatment capacity in many locations around the globe. There is renewed interest in implementing better waste management practices as well as treatment systems. What works best is a matter of local context. Regional or onsite processing. Both have their place in the healthcare waste management system. We will hear perspectives on this topic from a regional processing operator as well as an onsite operator.

Focus Session – Open burning of waste
Creating the enabling conditions for eliminating open burning of waste through regional roadmaps and city pilots (UN Habitat, RA Eng, Practical action, ISWA, IGES)
More than 2 billion people worldwide have no access to waste management systems and suffer significant morbidity from the 90% of waste that is dumped or burned in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The burning of municipal solid waste is a major contributor to global air pollution, emitting greenhouse gases and short-lived climate pollutants that infiltrate the air, ground, and water sources. This causes toxic health effects – such as respiratory infections, immune disorders, and reproductive abnormalities – for the people living and working close to waste burning.
Despite its catastrophic impact on health and environment, open burning of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been widely neglected, by funders and governments who lack tools and capacities to take action. Awareness of its impact is low at all levels.
This session will present a Climate and Clean Air Coalition funded 2-year project consisting of partners Engineering X, ISWA, IGES, Practical Action, and UN-Habitat who are working to develop regional roadmaps for Latin America, Africa and Asia, contextualised in city pilots, to pave the way for action and end open burning of waste. Speakers will include experts from the organisations and voices from Engineering X projects working on the ground to end open burning.

Women, Waste, and Climate: Unlocking Women’s Potential to tackle the triple planetary crisis and a Gender-Just Transition
This session will showcase the role, obstacles, and opportunities for women in the waste management sector to tackle the triple planetary crisis; climate change, plastic pollution and biodiversity loss through a gender-just transition to a circular economy. The session will explore women’s contributions and untapped potential as informal workers, entrepreneurs, leaders, and professionals. Through presentations and a panel of international speakers, we will explore policies, capacity-building programs, research, and other avenues for affecting a gender-just transition – one that incorporates the accountability structures needed to ensure women’s rights are protected and promoted; amplifies women’s power as change agents; and recognizes women’s unique knowledge and skills.
Finally, the Task Force will announce the publication of its 2nd Global Survey and partnership with USAID CCBO, GRID-Arendal and WIEGO.

Net-Zero Industry Leadership: Charting a Sustainable Course for a Greener Future
Amid the global call for Net-Zero commitments, industries stand at the forefront of catalyzing meaningful change. The panel session on “Net-Zero Industry Leadership: Charting a Sustainable Course for a Greener Future” will illuminate the strategies and initiatives that industry leaders are undertaking to navigate a path towards Net-Zero emissions. This session will delve into how industry leadership across diverse sectors, including manufacturing, technology, energy, and more, is prioritizing Net-Zero goals to align business growth with environmental stewardship. The panelists will share insights into the challenges they tackle and the opportunities they seize to foster sustainable practices, minimize carbon footprints, and advance the circular economy. Despite commitment to net-zero goals, the world remains a long way off the required path. Where are the gaps where business is not matching its rhetoric with reality?
